In this post I plan to tell you why the combination of HDPE plastic and reciprocating screw blow molding machines are the best choice for manufacturing plastic containers. Read on to see why this combination if perfect for producing HDPE plastic milk jugs.
“HDPE
noun
a type of commonly produced plastic made from ethylene and having a relatively high density, used chiefly for plastic bottles, piping, and replacement of wood.
“HDPE can be sourced from plants and is often used for milk jugs”.HDPE is a high density polyethylene used to create milk jugs. In the milk jug manufacturing process, HDPE pellets are mixed with recycled HDPE flakes. There are limits to how much recycled HDPE flakes are included In the manufacturing process.
Reciprocal Screw Blow Molding Machines and HDPE Milk Containers
What is a reciprocal screw blow molding machine? Reciprocating (Screw) Blow Molders are plastic processing machines that particularly cater to makers of milk jugs or other plastic bottles like juice bottles, edible oil containers, drink bottles, water bottles, as well as household chemical and automotive fluid containers.
The extruder feed screw reciprocates similar to an injection molding machine. The molds are in a fixed spot beneath the die head. They open and close but don’t shuttle. The clamps do not move, so there are less moving parts to break. The HDPE pellets and flakes are added to the blow molding machine. There the material is heated. When the material becomes a thick, gooey plastic it’s injected into molds that create “preforms”.
Once the HDPE plastics are fed into your blow molding machine and heated into preforms. As the screw moves forward, the HDPE plastic mix is injected into the molds. The plastic cools very fast due to a built-in cooling system.

HDPE containers are better than other materials for the environment
Another reason for manufacturing HDPE containers vs other materials. Although the plastic is made from fossil fuels currently, HDPE is recyclable. Typical HDPE plastic containers are around 96% product and 4% container by weight. That means that they have the lower Greenhouse Gas Emissions, (GHG) when being transported.
Example: New plastic milk jugs are not from old, recycled milk jugs. It would be insanitary, so all milk jugs use “virgin plastic”. Old milk jugs are recycled and used in other products like composite lumber. So, the material doesn’t go to waste.
